Letter from the Chair of the Board

2 February 2018

To our advisors, donors, partners and friends:

Greetings from Urgent Action Fund Asia and Pacific! We are happy to inform you that UAF A&P was launched on October 24, 2017, at the Prospera International Women’s Fund Biennial Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The event preceded a special tribute to Sunila Abeyesekera, who sadly left us in 2013, in remembrance of her leadership and contributions to our movements and towards the setting up this UAF sister fund in our regions. We are excited to join our sister funds in the USA, Africa and Latin America.

In Asia and the Pacific, we seek to resource the resilience of women and non-binary human rights defenders and their movements through rapid response grantmaking for their security and well-being, building of knowledge and capacities on safety and care, and activating philanthropy to resource women’s human rights.

UAF A&P is developing two types of grants:

  1. Security and Well-being Grants for defenders at risk, and
  2. Resourcing Resilience Grants for initiatives to enhance and sustain resilience, including in relation to unanticipated opportunities.

Allow us to introduce you to our amazing Co-Leads: Mary Jane N. Real on Programmes and Innovations and Virisila Buadromo on Resource Mobilisation and Strategic Partnerships. Many of you may be familiar with Jane and Viri as both are long-time women’s human rights advocates that have led feminist organisations in the regions. They are supported by a competent and diverse team based in the Philippines, Fiji and Australia. Since January 1, 2018, the team has assumed the responsibility of rapid response grantmaking for Indonesia and the Philippines, and beginning April 1, 2018, it will take on the regions of Asia and the Pacific.

As we roll out our full operations, the Co-Leads and their team will be in to ensure your continued engagement for the protection and support of women and non-binary human rights defenders in Asia and the Pacific. We look forward to working with you, building a safe, caring and sustainable environment for human rights defense.

Last but not least, we wish you all the very best as we usher in 2018 with new beginnings!

In solidarity and co-responsibility

Kamala Chandrakirana
