A year ago, in August 2021, we at Urgent Action Fund, Asia and Pacific, truly understood the reason for our existence. When the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, throwing its people and financial systems into disarray, we plunged right into the kind of crisis that we were set up for.
Radical Geographies is Urgent Action Fund, Asia & Pacific’s annual narrative of learning on how as a feminist rapid response fund we traversed the shaky grounds of 2021. This report takes you through the journey of how feminist grant-making prepared the grounds for human rights defence to spawn and fruit even in inhospitable terrains.
UAF A&P is deeply concerned about the spiralling political, economic and humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka. To ensure we are receptive and in solidarity with women and non-binary defenders of Sri Lanka, we are prioritising support for Sri Lankan women and non-binary activists and defenders, especially from marginalised communities from May - July 2022.
Over the past four years, UAF A&P has been learning and evolving as a regional feminist fund supporting the resistance and resilience of women and non-binary human rights defenders of Asia and the Pacific.
The Urgent Action Sister Funds are committed to the resistance and resilience of the brave women, girls, and non-binary activists and defenders of Afghanistan. We pledge to make resources and our collective support available for their safety and well-being as quickly and safely as possible.
The UAF Asia and Pacific Strategy Plan 2021-2023
It's a new year, and we have a new lens with which to view our work and purpose. Presenting 'Steering Towards New Feminist Horizons', the UAF A&P Strategy Plan for 2021-2023!
We are a feminist fund that supports the safety and well-being of women and non-binary activists and organisations taking risks. We support resilient movements and provide critical resources quickly to those under threat.
Our values are rooted in our community and stem from consultations amongst staff, advisors, board members grantees and partners. These values ground our work and purpose and allow us to respond to the evolving needs of activists, communities, movements and the contexts in which we work.
Learning and unlearning as a way to collaboratively thrive and flourish
Relationship-building and nurturing trust
Fore-fronting lived experiences of defenders and activists
Intentionally acknowledging our position as a funder to shift power and redistribute privilege
Flexibility to understand contexts of activists and defenders, and the support they require
Be amplifiers and facilitators for feminist movements to be seen and heard
Learning from setbacks to improve and improvise
Often, the contexts in which we work are unpredictable and politically volatile. Resilient defenders and organisations protect and support their communities by taking bold, creative and innovative steps to respond to emerging issues and unanticipated opportunities.
We resource resilience by listening deeply to our community and partners and offering necessary resources to women and non-binary human rights defenders and organisations in Asia and the Pacific when those resources are needed the most.
Building resilience also includes creating safe and inclusive environments, amplifying and generating critical information, practicing feminist models of leadership, and above all, adapting, learning and responding as we go.
Strategic Support to Defender Communities
Mobilising and Redistributing Resources
We derive strength from our membership in a global sisterhood of Urgent Action Funds. Each sister fund is autonomous, and each fund makes grants and fundraises within the region where they operate. Together, the sister funds have built solidarity and co-responsibility for a more just world. We practice collaboration, sharing power, and challenging the status quo, while also respecting our individual identities as regional funders grounded in our communities.
